Some love stories begin with a grand romantic gesture. Ashley & Adam’s started with a Hinge prompt about pasta. And if you know me, you know someone says pasta & I’m there, so I already had that in common with these two!
Ashley had written that pasta was her love language, and Adam responded with the very specific question: homemade butternut squash ravioli? A week later, these two engineers met for their first date at a small brewery in Poco. There were beers, lots of laughs, and eventually maybe a kiss at the end of the night that neither of them would forget.
Since then, they’ve tackled some pretty impressive adventures together (including 13 days straight deep in the backcountry navigating some seriously difficult conditions without a single argument). Their conclusion?! If they could survive that, they could conquer anything together.
Their engagement was equally perfect. Winter 2024, they returned to a secret Howe Sound-area hike Adam had introduced Ashley to two years earlier. With backpacks full of charcuterie and beers, they made their way to their favourite lookout. Ashley jokingly commented that it would be a great place to tell her he loved her.
Adam agreed. Then added, “And this would also be a great place to ask you to marry me.” Down on one knee. Ring out. Ashley said yes.
And fast forward a year and a bit to the following August, we were celebrating that next chapter at Hazelmere Golf & Tennis Club in Surrey, BC.
A Hazelmere Golf & Tennis Club Wedding in Surrey
Hazelmere Golf & Tennis Club is a well-known Surrey wedding venue and a beautiful choice for couples looking for a classic, polished setting surrounded by greenery. Its manicured grounds and elegant reception spaces create a timeless backdrop for everything from formal portraits to dinner, speeches and a packed dance floor.
For Ashley & Adam, it was the perfect setting for a wedding day that was every bit as beautiful as it was them.
There were beautiful, tender emotional moments (they had me tearing up during their vows), outrageous laughs, and some truly unforgettable dance moves. Hazelmere provided the picture-perfect setting, while Ashley & Adam brought all the love. And there was a LOT of love in all the best ways in every moment of the day.
First Look & Portraits at Campbell Valley Park
Before heading to Hazelmere, we started the day at Campbell Valley Regional Park in Langley for Ashley & Adam’s first look and all of their formal portraits.
I’ve been photographing at Campbell Valley since moving to Langley a decade ago, and it remains one of my favourite locations for both family sessions and wedding photography. The towering trees, open fields and winding natural pathways create that quintessential Fraser Valley/PNW feeling and give wedding portraits a completely different look from the venue itself.
We photographed their first look, bride and groom portraits, wedding party and family photos there before continuing on to Hazelmere for the celebration. I love this approach for wedding days because it allows couples to slow down, enjoy their portraits and get the formal photographs taken care of without spending their entire cocktail hour away from their guests.
A Wedding Day Full of Emotion, Laughter & Dance Moves
Once we arrived at Hazelmere, the day unfolded into exactly the kind of celebration I love photographing. The quiet moments were beautiful – the tender glances, happy tears and little moments between Ashley & Adam that didn’t need any direction.
And then came the laughs. And the dance floor. And these two deciding that their first dance needed a full-on choreographed 365-degree spin/flip in the air.
Yes, the bride went airborne. It was absolutely spectacular. 😂
It’s moments like these that make a wedding gallery feel like your wedding rather than simply a collection of pretty photographs. The gorgeous portraits and beautiful venue are important, but it’s the ridiculous laughs, unexpected moments and things you could never have planned that you’ll remember years later.
One Thing to Know When Considering Hazelmere
One practical detail worth knowing if you’re considering Hazelmere Golf & Tennis Club is that the venue has multiple reception spaces, so there can sometimes be more than one wedding happening at the property at the same time.
For many couples, this won’t be an issue at all. But if having the venue feel completely exclusive to you and your guests is important to your vision, it’s something I’d recommend asking about when touring the venue and selecting your wedding event space.
Ending the Night With a Toast
By the end of the evening, the dance floor had been thoroughly put through its paces and it was time for me to call it a night. Except Ashley & Adam insisted we couldn’t possibly end my work day without taking a shot together. So naturally, we obviously HAD to. Cheers to Ashley & Adam! 🥂 It was honestly the perfect ending to a wedding day filled with beautiful emotional moments, ridiculous laughter, big personalities and some questionable dance moves.
The Perfect Backdrop for a Very Special Couple
Hazelmere Golf & Tennis Club provided the beautiful, classic backdrop, but Ashley & Adam were what made this wedding day unforgettable.
These two are so completely themselves together – adventurous, hilarious, romantic, food-loving, and always ready for a good dance in the kitchen or on the dance floor. They’ve already added a very important new member to their family with their dog, and they’re looking forward to everything the future holds, including eventually raising a family together.
Ashley & Adam, I absolutely adore you both. Thank you for letting me photograph all of it – the sweet quiet moments, the outrageous laughs, the airborne dancing-queen bride, and that final shot.
Cheers to you two and everything still to come. 🤍
