There are some engagement sessions that you photograph and immediately know you’re going to be obsessed with the gallery (which is pretty much all of my sessions if I’m being honest…). This was one of those sessions. I was instantly in love. From the moment the bride described their hopes for session location, I could see her vision & met her vibe. It was meant to be.
Downtown Vancouver has always been one of my favourite places to photograph couples. There’s something about the combination of architecture, city streets, unexpected little pockets of beauty, and the energy of the city that constantly inspires me creatively. No two downtown Vancouver engagement sessions ever look exactly the same, and I think that’s part of the magic.
For this session, we spent the evening exploring some of my favourite downtown Vancouver landmarks and architectural spaces, creating a gallery that blended editorial, fashion-inspired portraits with the candid, in-between moments I love so much. And we stayed out until we completely lost the light. Honestly? Worth it.
There’s something so fun about photographing a couple who is willing to wander, explore, and trust the process. Especially in downtown Vancouver, where you can start in one location and find yourself completely somewhere else a few blocks later, with an entirely different backdrop.
This session was also unexpectedly sentimental for me. Our route through downtown felt very similar to the route I took for my own wedding portraits after getting married at Brix & Mortar in nearby Yaletown. Getting to photograph another couple’s engagement session through some of those same streets and neighbourhoods made the evening feel a little extra special.
We started our evening at the Vancouver Public Library, and honestly, it’s hard to imagine a better place to begin a downtown Vancouver engagement session. The architecture is incredible.
Inspired by the ancient Colosseum in Rome, the library’s distinctive circular structure and dramatic columns create an instantly recognizable backdrop that feels both grand and editorial. It’s one of those locations where the architecture does most of the work for you, giving couples an opportunity to create portraits that feel elevated and fashion-forward while still being completely connected to the city. From there, we made our way toward the Vancouver Art Gallery and the surrounding downtown streets.
This was the part of the session where the gallery really came alive.
The Art Gallery’s architecture offers a completely different visual experience from the library, and the surrounding streets give us even more opportunities to change up the look and feel of the photographs. We moved between structured architectural portraits, walking shots, spontaneous moments, and the little pockets of connection that happen naturally when you’re simply exploring a city together.
And then we walked back to the Vancouver Public Library. Because they loved it that much. Honestly, I completely understood.
One of the things I love most about photographing engagement sessions in downtown Vancouver is that there isn’t just one way to do it. I have several different “routes” I recommend to my couples depending on the vibe they’re looking for and the areas of the city they want to explore.
You can build a session around architecture and city streets. You can incorporate coffee shops and restaurants (be sure to check with the place before the day-of for what they allow). Take a wander through Yaletown. Add waterfront views or a walk along the seawall. You can even combine multiple neighbourhoods and locations into one extended session. The possibilities are almost endless.
And that’s why I often recommend considering more than one hour if you want to explore downtown Vancouver. An hour goes incredibly quickly once you factor in walking between locations, stopping for different backdrops, and giving yourselves enough time to actually enjoy the experience without rushing from one spot to the next. For couples who have a specific vision – or simply want more variety in their gallery – an extended engagement session gives us the freedom to slow down and explore.

Simple, but so much variety (& this is just the ~60 of my top favourites out of hundreds in their gallery, but really I wish I could share every single one with you.)
And then, of course, there are the photos we created along the way like the ones close to the end with the cool lighting & silhouettes.
I love that this gallery feels a little different from my typical engagement sessions. There are more editorially posed portraits mixed alongside my signature candid moments, creating a balance that feels polished without losing the genuine connection between the two of them.
It’s a reminder that your engagement session doesn’t have to fit into one specific posing style. While editing remains consistent, maybe you love natural, candid photographs. Maybe you want a few more editorial, fashion-forward portraits. Maybe you want a little bit of everything.
That’s the beauty of creating your session together. Downtown Vancouver gives us the space to make it completely your own.
