Some wedding days feel like they’ve been a long time coming. Taryn & Colby’s was definitely one of those. In fact, you could say they’d been waiting for this moment for quite a while.
Taryn first laid eyes on Colby all the way back in Grade 7 while he was playing on a trampoline at her best friend Ashley’s house. Ashley just happened to also be Colby’s cousin, and the two were officially introduced at a Halloween party that Ashley organized. Fast forward through years of joking, teasing, and constantly bugging each other, and eventually these two found themselves planning a life together.
Their engagement story was just as perfectly them. During a week-long road trip, Taryn had become convinced Colby was going to propose. By day five, she was getting impatient enough to express her annoyance about the fact that it still hadn’t happened. Colby’s response? “Well, that would have been a good idea.” He delivered it so convincingly that Taryn believed him.
Then they made their way to Lake Louise. Along the trail, Colby had secretly set up a tripod/selfie stick and convinced Taryn they were taking photos. He told her there was one more picture – except it was actually a video, and at exactly the right moment, he proposed. Taryn’s response, captured forever on video:
“I KNEW IT.”
And after all that waiting, we finally arrived at their wedding day.
A Chilliwack Golf Club Wedding
Chilliwack Golf Club is one of those Fraser Valley wedding venues that has a special place in my heart.
I’ve been photographing weddings here for a decade +, including some of the very first weddings ever hosted in the Pavilion. I was also a preferred vendor/photographer at Chilliwack Golf Club for many years before eventually taking a step back to spend some time photographing at other venues and refreshing my creative palate.
So coming back to photograph Taryn & Colby’s wedding felt a little bit like returning to an old favourite.
The venue offers a beautiful combination of manicured golf course grounds, natural Fraser Valley scenery and a classic wedding reception setting. The Pavilion provides a lovely space for celebrating with family and friends, while the surrounding property offers plenty of opportunities for wedding portraits.
After photographing here for so many years, I’ve seen the venue through countless seasons, weddings, weather changes and different creative approaches. And that’s one of the things I love most about returning to a familiar place – even when you know a venue well, every couple brings something completely different to it.
A Wedding Day That Was Long Overdue
For these two, this wasn’t just another wedding day. This was a long-awaited moment. And apparently, their vow book had been waiting for quite some time too. During the ceremony, Taryn opened her vow book and literally had to blow the dust off it before reading her vows. 😂
Honestly, after everything these two had been through to finally reach this day, it was the perfect little moment of humour in the middle of an incredibly meaningful ceremony.
Because that’s their love. They’ve always been the couple who bugs and jokes around with each other, and that personality carried straight through their wedding day. Beneath all the laughter, though, were the quiet moments – the emotion, the anticipation, and the realization that after all those years, they were finally standing there as husband and wife.
Why I Love Photographing Weddings at Chilliwack Golf Club
One of the things I love about Chilliwack Golf Club is how easily a wedding day can flow here.
The grounds provide a beautiful backdrop for portraits while the Pavilion creates a natural gathering place for the reception and celebration. The surrounding Fraser Valley landscape gives photographs that classic BC feeling, while the venue itself provides a polished and timeless setting. And because I’ve photographed here for so many years, I know the property well – from the best places for portraits to how the light moves throughout the day.
But ultimately, it’s the couples who make each wedding here feel different. Their wedding was filled with the kind of moments I love most: emotional, genuine, funny and completely unscripted.
After All Those Years…
There’s something pretty special about photographing a wedding when you know just how long the couple has been waiting to get there. From a Grade 7 crush at a trampoline, to a Halloween party, years of teasing each other, a Lake Louise proposal and finally a Chilliwack Golf Club wedding day – their love story has been a long time in the making. And somehow, the waiting made the celebration that much sweeter.
I’m so happy I got to come back to CGC’s wedding pavilion to photograph this chapter for them. After a decade of weddings at this venue, it felt especially meaningful to return for a couple whose wedding day had been so long awaited.
Congratulations, you two. 🤍 Here’s to finally getting to say “I do“, and to a lifetime of continuing to bug each other along the way.
