VanDusen Botanical Garden Wedding | Romantic Fall Wedding in Vancouver

There are few wedding venues in Vancouver quite as unique & timeless as VanDusen Botanical Garden.

Tucked away in the heart of the city, VanDusen feels like stepping into another world. Winding garden pathways, vibrant seasonal blooms, peaceful lakes, and hidden corners create a setting that feels wonderfully secluded despite being just minutes from downtown Vancouver. Every season offers something different, making it one of the most beautiful venues for couples who love nature without venturing far from the city.

For Anna and Ciaran, however, VanDusen wasn’t simply a beautiful place to get married.

It was where one of the most important moments of their story had already begun.

The two first met while studying Electrical Engineering at UBC, where they spent years as friends on the same student design team before eventually realizing there was something more between them during their final year of university. In fact, their friends jokingly referred to them as “the old married couple” long before they officially started dating.

As it turns out, they weren’t wrong.

Over the years, Anna and Ciaran created a tradition of visiting VanDusen Botanical Garden’s Festival of Lights every Christmas season. During one of those annual visits, Ciaran led Anna beneath the beautiful rose garden archway – a place that had quietly become special to them over the years – and asked her to marry him.

When it came time to choose a wedding venue, there really wasn’t another place that felt quite as meaningful.

Returning to VanDusen to exchange their vows felt like bringing their story beautifully full circle.

One of my favourite parts of photographing weddings at VanDusen Botanical Garden is the incredible variety the property offers. Every turn reveals another stunning backdrop, from colourful seasonal gardens and towering trees to peaceful walking paths, charming stonework, and elegant floral displays.

Even in autumn, when many gardens begin settling in for winter, VanDusen remains absolutely stunning. Rich fall colours, soft golden light filtering through the trees, and the quieter pace of the season create such a romantic atmosphere for wedding portraits.

It’s one of those venues that encourages you to slow down, wander together, and simply enjoy the beauty surrounding you.

One stop on the portrait portion of the day was especially meaningful.

We returned to the rose garden archway where Ciaran had proposed during the Christmas lights just two years earlier. Standing in the very place where their engagement began – this time as newlyweds – made for some of the most sentimental photographs of the entire day.

Moments like that are exactly why I always encourage couples to choose locations that mean something to them.

As heartfelt as the day was, it was also full of laughter.

One of my favourite ceremony moments happened when Anna and Ciaran settled one important question with a quick game of rock, paper, scissors to decide who would read their vows first. It had everyone smiling and perfectly reflected the playful friendship that has always been at the heart of their relationship.

Another meaningful touch came as their siblings signed the marriage licence as witnesses, making the celebration feel even more personal and centred around the people who have been part of their journey from the very beginning.

Their wedding style perfectly complemented the gardens themselves.

Filled with cheerful florals and fun, colourful details, the day felt joyful, relaxed, and effortlessly elegant. Every corner of the venue seemed to bloom alongside them, creating a celebration that felt vibrant without ever taking away from the natural beauty of VanDusen itself.

Looking through this gallery, I hope you’ll notice not only the incredible scenery but also the little moments in between – the laughter, the quiet glances, the traditions that have shaped their relationship, and the joy of finally celebrating in the place that had already meant so much to them.

If you’re dreaming of a garden wedding in Vancouver, VanDusen Botanical Garden truly is one of the city’s most beautiful venues. Whether you’re planning an intimate ceremony or a larger celebration, it offers timeless landscapes, stunning seasonal beauty, and countless locations for unforgettable photographs.
