Back in November 2022, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to AUSTRALIA for the first time – crossing off a major item on my bucket list! Growing up, I always have had a huge passion for travel, new cultures, animals, geography + more. Naturally, the Discovery channel was often my channel of choice as a young girl and I quickly found myself obsessed with The Crocodile Hunter (RIP Steve Irwin). My admiration for the show & wildlife work they were doing stretched so far that as a 7 year old I remember carefully crafting an email to Steve and diligently sending it off to their zoo’s head office. Surprisingly enough, I received a response back and it made my year – I wish I still had that email! As you can imagine, I was devastated by Irwin’s death years later and have always held a strong desire to come to Australia. Throughout my teen years, my father would end up frequently making annual business trips to Australia and together we would plan scheme plot and hope for him to one day share this country with me. While we haven’t made it to this continent together yet, I hope to one day in the future.

While this was always a goal of mine, I probably never would have followed through on making it a reality until much later in life if fate had not intervened. You see, cut to 2012 and a young naive me walked into a pet store in Kelowna on a whim to hand in a resume for a job. The manager, Michelle, was incredibly enthusiastic, warm, and receptive. We immediately hit it off and I soon found myself rushing home to change and come right back to start at my new job. Michelle & I quickly found out that we were kindred spirits – two peas in a pod we might as well be related. More often than not (okay more like 99.9% of the time), we were on EXACTLY the same page – food cravings, what we were doing, feeling, thinking, etc. You can imagine how devastated we both were 4 years later when we both found our personal lives crumbling, causing us both to have to start over on our own, move cities (& in Michelle’s case – move countries back to her home country of Australia). I feared I may never see her again in person yet we both knew we could not and would not let that happen. And then the pandemic hit.

As COVID-19 closed borders and cancelled plans, we Facetimed and waited. Waited for restrictions to lift, for a flight deal, for vacation time at my office job, & for fate to intervene once more for us. By 2022, Australia had just opened up it’s borders and I coincidentally had everything fall perfectly into place on my end. Before I knew it, a roundtrip ticket had been bought and this trip of a lifetime was officially happening.

While I couldn’t stay as long as I would have liked, this first trip was my first taste of Australia and of course I have entirely fallen in love with New South Wales. There’s so much more to see of this beautiful country, and more visits & hugs to be had with Michelle. It’s safe to say I will hopefully be back again very soon. Until then, here’s a look at just some of my favourite shots wandering around New South Wales…

You guys, I’ve been SO excited to share this session with you!!

Michelle & Karim were married on the beaches of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, overlooking the ocean. Their ceremony was touching, romantic & intimate, and their entire day was filled with an overwhelming sense of joy that reached out to each and every person there – you can check them out on the blog by clicking here.

Being in this absolutely beautiful location (seriously the ocean in Punta Cana is one of the best I’ve ever experienced and even the sand on the beach was beyond words!) we just couldn’t resist making the most of our time by sneaking in a “day after” session (or maybe I should call it a “honeymoon” session haha ;)). The love these two have for each other is passionate, caring and understanding and I loved every minute of watching them interact. There’s something to be said for their love and being able to capture it for them in this intimate setting was a privilege.

This session was everything I could’ve hoped for and more. I’ve wanted to do a session involving water for a long time, whether an ocean or a lake, it didn’t matter. There is something about being in the water that brings about a different level of intimacy and passion that can be hard to capture on camera and I love the depth it adds to the entire experience.  Check out their ocean session below:

Up on the blog today is the always stunning ever-talented Hannah of Hannah Cummins Photography!  If she looks familiar to you, that’s for good reason since she is one of my closest photog-friends. A few brief years ago when I was just starting out in photography and getting my business established (fast forward to present and I STILL feel like I’m just getting established – small business owner problems!), she took me under her wing and I’m so lucky she did. What she saw in me & my lack of knowledge or experience at the time I have no idea but I feel so fortunate to get to work with this gorgeous lady week in and week out during wedding season. I photograph almost all of her weddings alongside her, and this August we get to trade places and she will be second shooting for me – I cannot wait to have her with me.
Building relationships with your peers and those in the wedding industry is always good but when you find a connection that goes beyond work, that stretches into a friendship, it’s pure gold. This girl has stood by me through life’s ups and downs and has always helped me find my way even when I didn’t want to admit where life was taking me. So happy to be located closer to her now in Langley! We try to sneak out at least once a year to exchange portrait sessions with each other – being business owners, updating your headshots and profile photos always helps keep you up to date & current with your clients! She always rocks it in front of the camera, and this session may be my favourite one of her yet!

San Francisco – oh, how you stole my heart. I’ve always wanted to visit this city – the Golden Gate Bridge was one of many destinations on my bucket list, but I never could’ve imagined how pleasantly surprised I would be by the beauty this city has to offer. The artistic community found within San Francisco shines through in every corner of the city. The architecture of the buildings, the people milling about, art galleries abound and even street signs & store fronts are uniquely picturesque in their own right. I fell in love with the atmosphere found here – the energy & creativity buzzing in the streets could be felt everywhere and I only wish I could have explored even more. One late evening and morning spent roaming the streets & piers were not even close to enough time to do this beautiful city justice.
